The Radvanovsky Show
David McKee (Augusta, GA) 9/3/2018 6:35 PM
This would be just another night at the Vienna State Opera were it not for the galvanizing presence of Sondra Radvanovsky, she of the melancholy timbre and quick vibrato, so apt for Verdi's Ethiopian princess. Her rich voice fills out Verdi's vocal lines in exceedingly gratifying manner. Against her, the Amneris sounds one-dimension, the Radames thin and grating. It's hard to believe Luciana d'Intino has been singing Amneris for a quarter-century but she's hanging in there pretty well and has developed an effective pianissimo. Franco Vassallo is a gruff, short-breathed Amonasro but he gets the job done. The two towering basses are not pillars of strength. Soran Coliban (Ramfis) judders unceasingly and Ryan Speedo Green (King of Egypt) bleats earnestly. The small roles are exceptionally well cast. In the pit, Philippe Auguin seems to be striving for a massive-scaled reading but sometimes, as in the stretta to the Triumphal Scene, you just want him to get a move on. Traditionalists will be pleased with the dramaturgy and sleek, Egyptian lines of Nicolas Joel's production. The bottom line: Until Sondra Radvanovsky televises Aida with worthier co-stars this is almost a must-have. Picture and sound quality are top-notch.
